01: FORGING AHEAD WITH COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY & GLA

Neuropsychologist and owner of the Lyme and PANS Treatment Center, Elena Monarch, Ph.D., has accepted a Research Consultant position with Global Lyme Alliance, the leading non-profit organization known for funding pivotal research projects to support proper diagnosis and treatment of patients with Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

GLA created the first research center for the study of persistent Lyme at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. GLA is interested in collaborating with Dr. Monarch to investigate the potential link between Lyme disease and psychiatric conditions associated with brain inflammation, notably, Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS).

Dr. Monarch has spent the last year establishing plans for these projects with researchers from Columbia University and executive leadership at Global Lyme Alliance. These collaborative research projects may elucidate the long-suspected link between Lyme disease and psychiatric symptoms, a link that
Dr. Monarch has observed and treated clinically for the past 15 years.

02: INTERNATIONAL LYME AND ASSOCIATED DISEASES SOCIETY SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHT

NFL Neurologist Chad Prusmack M.D. says athletes with persistent concussion symptoms are more likely to have asymptomatic Lyme disease, mold toxicity, or both.

Neurosurgical consultant to the Denver Broncos, Dr. Chad Prusmack, presented research showing that NFL players who are most impaired by concussions often have undiagnosed tick-borne disease or mold toxicity. Among neurologists, concussion recovery is already known to be dependent on two main factors, bio-mechanical force of the triggering injury and something known as “sub-concussive burden,” that is, the accumulation of very mild but repeated brain trauma.

After studying thirty-six of the most recovery-resistant concussed football players, Dr. Prusmack's research revealed a third factor: 33% of the recovery-resistant players had undiagnosed tick-borne disease, and 39% had mold toxicity. Concussion is a mechanical trauma known to break the blood brain barrier, allowing unwelcome irritants such as toxins and infections to affect the brain. Dr. Prusmack explained the direct relevance of this data. In order to minimize long-term brain injury from concussions, all athletes can be routinely screened and treated for tick-borne infections and toxins.
