"Psychiatric Illness" versus Health Condition
Many so-called "psychiatric illnesses" are manifestations of untreated health conditions. The most obvious health conditions associated with psychiatric symptoms are untreated infections (such as strep, Lyme, Bartonella, viruses), toxins, and misdirected immune responses. More recently, mounting research points to the role of diet, gut health, food allergies, and nutrient malabsorption on brain and psychiatric health.
One of the common unfortunate consequences of these health conditions is their propensity to cause inflammation, and interrupt the natural healing processes of the body. The brain is normally protected from health conditions by the blood-brain-barrier. However, conditions such as Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), reveal that the blood-brain-barrier can be breached, leading to a somewhat predictable constellation of symptoms outlined by Susan Swedo MD, Principal Researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health.
Maladaptive or unexplained neuropsychiatric symptoms such as severe anxiety or restlessness, OCD, tics, insomnia, irritability, and moodiness, are symptoms deserving of medical attention. With all the knowledge that has been gained about physical triggers of psychiatric symptoms, and the obvious role of infectious and inflammatory triggers, why are mental health symptoms labeled "psychiatric illnesses"? Mislabeling an inflammatory blood-brain barrier condition as a "psychiatric illness" is misleading and, frankly, dangerous.
Got stress?
Here are two great options for 2018.
