Sylvia Fogel, MD
Dr. Fogel graduated from Cornell Medical College in 1999 and completed her adult psychiatry residency at Columbia University. She went on to obtain a certificate in psychoanalytic medicine from the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Dr. Fogel has supervised and taught medical trainees throughout her career both at Columbia University and now at the MGH McLean Psychiatry Residency Program.
Starting with traditional allopathic medical training, Dr. Fogel was later compelled to explore multiple integrative and complementary approaches including training in functional medicine, trauma-related care, meditation, and the use of herbs and nutraceuticals to support physical and mental health.
When evaluating and treating patients, Dr. Fogel holds in mind that multiple, mutually regulating body systems, including the gastrointestinal system, the immune system and metabolic health, impact the entire nervous system. The brain resides in the body so the very best care for psychiatric symptoms must consider the complex interactions of multiple body systems on the functioning of the brain.
Dr. Fogel has a particular interest in neuroimmune conditions such as PANS/PANDAS as well as regressive autism. While Dr. Fogel has primarily worked with adult and young adult patients, she recognizes the shortage of providers treating neuroimmune conditions and occasionally provides consultation for adolescents and children, particularly those who have been unresponsive to traditional standards of care.
Dr. Fogel is hopeful that environmental factors and lifestyle choices, including diet and environmental exposures, will play a larger role in psychiatric care in the years to come.
